Easily Blythe’s most ambitious project to date, containing no less than five short stories, and weighing in at a respectable 44 pages! Would you believe that it was completed no less than a month after his previous release Just… Mack-Lah!? While the stories on offer are quite diverse, you will no doubt notice that many of them share the theme of monster hunger.

Let the single page starter “Yum Peg” whet your appetite for the 12-page tale “Comma” that follows, about a friend who breaks fridges. Up next is a pair of Monster stories: “The Monster Story (It’s Just Called The Monster Story)”, and the fittingly titled “Another Monster Story”. To wrap things up is the loose sequel to Just… Mack-Lah‘s ”A-Lee-Lee-Leh (It Means ‘Ta-Pee-Pa’)”, and Blythe’s throwback to Seuss titled, “The Cat In The Hat Comes Right”.

Following A Toothbrush‘s two story format, Just… Mack-Lah!, Blythe’s second publication, was completed in a mix of pencil and black texta just after turning three-and-a-half years of age.

The opening story “Ko-Rah-Kah (Rock)”, which the author has been “dreaming about [his] whole life”, is a tale of children on a tram and their wish that maybe should not have been wished. The book concludes with the educational, Dr Seuss influenced “A-Lee-Lee-Leh (It Means ‘Ta-Pee-Pa’)”.

From the mind of a two-year-old, Blythe’s first release A Toothbrush is told in a mix of standard English and Blythe’s own language.

Don’t let his age fool you though, there’s really no messing around here. Open the book and you are instantly greeted by his beautiful and thoughtful grey lead pencil and black ink illustrations, and thrown straight into the deep end with the intensely titled ”I Split Open And the Blood Not Come Out And the Heart Is Beating” – a fictional account of injury, whose long chain of destruction climaxes perfectly and rather naturally with the very thing we all end on.

The second story “A Truck-Ka: Is This A Make Up? NO!” continues with the theme of destruction, but also throws in a healthy dose of adventure and foraging.
